Introduction

The Weddings and Honeymoon Unit of the Ministry of Tourism offers services to assist you in organizing your own ceremony or, by acting as a facilitator between you and on-island wedding consultants, help you to plan any type of wedding.

Following are some of the charges you can expect:

Marriage Licence fee: $100.00

Minister only: Weekdays from $150; Weekends from $175;
Rehearsals from $50 per hour.

Photographer only: From $350 per hour (colour or black & white, 36 exposures, negatives & album). Additional time extra.

Videographer only: From $450 per hour with editing

Do I need a licence to get married in The Islands Of The Bahamas?
Yes, a Bahamian marriage licence is required.

Is there a fee for the marriage licence?
Yes, there is a fee of $100.00 payable to the Registrar General's Department.

Is a blood test required?
No, a blood test is not required.

Would I be able to use my marriage licence from my country?
No, only the Bahamian marriage licence is legal in The Islands Of The Bahamas.

Can my Pastor perform the wedding ceremony?
No, however your Pastor may assist the local Pastor with the wedding ceremony.

Can I get married the same day as my arrival in The Islands Of The Bahamas?
No, both parties must have resided in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas for not less than one day prior to the date of the application.

Can I apply for a marriage licence by mail?
No, both parties must be in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas at the time of the application.

I would like to get married in the Family Islands; do I need to come to Nassau for a marriage licence?
No, you can obtain a marriage licence at the Commissioner's office on that island.

Can I get married on the weekend?
Yes, you can get married on Saturday or Sunday, provided you make application during the working days of Thursday or Friday.

Would my marriage licence be legal in my country?
Yes, the Bahamas marriage licence is a legal document issued by the Bahamas government.

Requirements For Obtaining a Marriage Licence in The Bahamas:

1. Both parties must be in The Commonwealth of the Bahamas at the time of the application.

2. Persons wishing to be married in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas may do so after one day. That is to say, if a person arrives in The Bahamas on Monday, they may come into the Registrar General's Office on Tuesday, obtain a Marriage Licence (while waiting), and be married on the same day.

3. If either part has been divorced, the original final decree or a certified copy must be produced. If either party is widowed, being certified of the deceased spouse must be produced. If either party is unmarried, being a citizen or resident of the U.S.A., a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn before a U.S. Consul at the American Embassy, Nassau, The Bahamas.

4. If either party is unmarried, being a citizen or resident of a country other than the U.S.A., a declaration certifying this fact must be sworn before a Notary Public or other person authorized to administer oaths in that country and must accompany the application for the Marriage Licence.

5. The parties must produce some form of identification which has a photograph attached. The identification document must have been issued by a Government Office in the country where the parties reside.

6. The parties must produce evidence of the date of their arrival in The Bahamas.

7. Persons desirous of being married in a Family Island ( any island outside of New Providence) can obtain a Marriage Licence at the Commissioner's Office on that island and need not come to Nassau.

8. No blood test is necessary.

9. The fee for the licence is $100.00.

Note: Marriage Licences are issued at the office of the Registrar General in Nassau. This office is open to the public Mondays to Fridays between the hours of 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
